The term ocular hypertension typically refers to any situation in which the pressure inside of the eye is higher than normal. Ocular Hypertension is not considered a disease by itself, but it can lead to a condition known as glaucoma. Glaucoma is a serious disease that causes vision loss and can also lead to blindness if left untreated. On it's own, ocular hypertension does not cause damage to vision. This condition must be monitored carefully and, in some cases, treated with topical eye medications. If your doctor feels that you are at low risk of developing.
Why Wellness Matters Steve Anderson, Holt of California
You never know if something's wrong until you go and get it checked out. And that's when I got scared. Is when I actually got it checked out. But I'm glad I did, or else I might not be here today. Holt implemented some activities, such as the Sutter Health screening. The day of the screening, I came in the work like any other day. And I didn't even remember about the health screening until a fellow employee had come up and said, hey Steve, are you going to the health screening today.
And I said, oh that's today. The first thing I did was go in and they took my blood pressure. And the nurse looked up at me and asked me if I was feeling OK. I said, I feel great, why And she goes, well your blood pressure is extremely high. Why don't you continue the health screening and get it rechecked at the end of the health screen His blood pressure was 230 over 120. Steve did not have any symptoms that would have led him to believe that he.
Was in fact having this blood pressure. No headache, no shortness of breath, no pain in the chest. The reading that he presented with is something that's considered hypertensive crisis. Now a hypertensive crisis can actually go on to prove fatal. Or at the very least, cause a stroke. About that time, the nurse told me I should probably go see my doctor immediately. And so I did. I took the rest day off work. Went to go see my doctor. And from there, got put into the emergency room. And got a nice three day stay in a hospital.
Trying to figure out why it was so high and how to lower it. Now, I've lost about 50 pounds. I've been going to the gym almost every day. It all comes back to my kids, and wanting to live a lot longer for them. Being around for them. I'd like to walk my daughter down the aisle when she decides to get married. I want to be there for my son when he graduates. And I just want to maintain a lifestyle that hopefully they can see, and also do the same.
What is Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy
So Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy is a neurodegeneration. It's a brain disease that's progressive, that's characterized by the buildup of a protein called Tau. What generally happens is a person gets symptomatic in their middle life30s, 40s. Personality change, mood swings, irritability, maybe aggression, and those symptoms continue to progress as an individual lives. And ultimately, if the individual lives long enough, there can be dementia, Parkinsonism, gate or speech disorders. And now we're even seeing a subset with ALSlike symptoms. In my laboratory, we prepare these very large brain slides, which aren't very commonly used.
The beauty of those large brain slides is that you can hold them up on a photo scanner or just look at them with your naked eye, and you can see that the pathology. You can see how widespread the pathology is. So what it looks like is the Tau protein, which we, through a series of reagents, stain brown so you see this tremendous buildup of this brown protein throughout the cerebral cortex and in the deep structures of the brain. It doesn't take an expert, it doesn't take a doctor or pathologist.
MAOIs and tricyclics Intro to Psychology
The MAO inhibitors andtTricyclics were introduced in the late 1950's and early 1960's. They both increase levels of norepinephrine and serotonin. The MAO inhibitors work by increasing the availability of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. However, the use of MAOs is limited due to the side effects and toxicity. That is, users must avoid certain foods and drugs to prevent serious side effects. One such side effect is a life threatening increase in blood pressure. The tricyclics were discovered when researchers were working to create a better phenylthiazine antipsychotic and found a drug that improved.
Mood. Although not effective for all patients, they do reduce the severity and duration of the depressive episodes. The tricyclics include the drug imipramine, and that drug was discovered accidentally. Some of the tricyclics are also used in the management of chronic pain, for bed wetting, and for the treatment of ADHD, as we saw in the discussion on drugs in our consciousness lesson, drugs can produce side effects and the side effects for the tricyclics include dry mouth, irritability, weight gain, confusion and constipation.
