4 Ways You Can Reduce High Blood Pressure
Most people who have high blood pressure have no idea that they have it. We bring you the bottom line on the silent symptoms of high blood pressure. Hi, I'm Pilar Gerasimo with a Bottom Line Expert report on high blood pressure. I'm here today with Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum. She is the director of Women's Heart Health at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. Dr. Suzanne, let's get right into it. What are the symptoms, if any, of high blood pressure You know about six million Americans are living with high blood pressure, and it's called.
The silent killer because you can't exactly tell that you have itsometimes there are no symptoms. On the other hand, some people can develop symptoms like headaches, blurring of vision, shortness of breath, even chest pain. So if you have any of these symptoms, please go see your doctor, because the silent killer is actually just that. It could be a killer. Aside from obvious things like excess weight or obesity, what are the primary risk factors for high blood pressure When it's not due to family history or a hereditary problem or an issue with the kidneys, you.
Have to look at the lifestyle issues again. Alcoholexcess of alcohol or binge drinking can lead to high blood pressure. Also look at your diet. Too much saltit is actually a risk factor for hypertension. And if you're not exercisingsedentary lifestyleor if you have diabetes. All of the things that lead to the stiffening of the arteries are the risk factors. Your diet, your exercise, even stress. Diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol.all of these things can lead to high blood pressure. Is high blood pressure treatable without medication You mentioned a lot of lifestyle factors.
If it's not due to a primary issue, as I mentionedlike the kidney or an adrenal issuethen it's truly about lifestyle. It is truly about the choices you make with diet and exercise and how you live your life. I would say watch your alcohol, don't smoke and really watch what you eat, how you move, and how you choose to live. The bottom line on blood pressure is that unless you're dealing with a specific medical condition like the ones Dr. Steinbaum mentioned, most of the interventions that are going to.
Why is My Right Foot Swollen During Pregnancy
Why is my right foot swollen during pregnancy Many women start retaining fluid during pregnancy, and water flows downhill. What do you do about swollen feet Drink more liquids and eat less salt so that you do not retain as much water. I'm already peeing for two. Drinking more seems counter intuitive. Drinking more water versus soda, coffee and caffeinated tea can help resolve water retention. What else can I do Put your feet up to help circulate fluids back toward your core, instead of them accumulating around your feet. I think the technical term for this is edema.
Remember that the hormones that help the ligaments and muscles relax to give the baby space to grow make your feet grow too. And unlike your stomach, your feet may actually stay that new bigger size. My biggest issue is swelling in my feet, and primarily the right foot. Excessive swelling is a sign of preeclampsia. If you have excessive swelling along with symptoms like a puffy face or hands or blood singing in your ears or seeing red, contact your doctor immediately. You do not want me to try to get the blood pressure down by drinking more water or taking.
Diuretics in that case Absolutely not. Preeclampsia is life threatening, and the only treatment in most cases is delivering the baby. If my blood pressure was not high before, it is now. If you don't have high blood pressure when you check it, then this could be as simple as the fact that you wore a tight sock on the right foot limiting fluid flow. It would be nice to think the solution is changing foot wear. Or slept on your right side so the fluid couldn't move as well from there as the left foot.
There is actually advice to sleep on your left side so the kidneys don't have to strain so hard. I'd like to not have to worry about it. If you put your feet up and the right foot is still swollen, this could mean there's a blood clot in the leg, especially if there's pain in the leg. That would be a headache. If you have the swelling with a headache that won't go away, then we're back to preeclampsia. Ditto if you have chest pains and trouble breathing. While they say having a baby takes your breath away, no one mentioned that.

SelfTest for Thyroid Problems
Hi I'm Dr. Allen Peters, Physician Healthy Aging Expert from NourishingWellness and I'm here today for About to share with you how to do a SelfTest for Thyroid Problems. This is a very simple exam which I do on every patient that I see, and you can do on yourself. You put your head back and feel for the thyroid cartilage. You feel both sides of the cartilage, and you might feel a small amount of soft tissue. You can exaggerate the tissue or exaggerate the thyroid cartilage by swallowing several times. If you feel more than a small amount.
Of tissueIf you feel a swelling or lumps or bumps this may be indicative on an enlarged thyroid or thyroid nodules which could be benign or malignant. If you do feel something large you should see your doctor. If he or she agrees the next step is usually getting an ultrasound. Now I want to mention that there are also some lumps behind the cartilage on the side of the neck, and these are just lymph nodes. I'm talking about the actual thyroid cartilage itself and the gland that is right there in.
That particular area. By the way, I want to emphasize that you could have an abnormal thyroid without being able to feel anything. It can be either hypothyroid or hyperthyroid. So if you are having symptoms of an increased metabolic rate like high blood pressure and palpitations and anxiety and nervousness to a great degree. Or if you are having slow down symptoms of slowdown metabolism like being tired and fatigued and depressed and low blood pressure and low pulse rate and constipated and hair falling out, then you may have thyroid disease even if you can't feel anything abnormal. So under those conditions.

Side Effects of Taking Statins
About 20 of adults over 45 are taking a statin medication. But should they be.and are they all benefitting from it We talked to an expert to find out, and we're bringing you the bottom line on what everybody should know about taking statin medications. Hi, I'm Pilar Gerasimo with a Bottom Line Expert report on some of the dangerous side effects associated with a class of cholesterollowering drugs known as statins. I'm here with Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum, the director of Women's Heart Health at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.
I've heard that statins have been described by some experts as the most dangerous drug on the market. I've heard also that about one in four adults over 45 are currently taking them. So it strikes me that there must be some either very underpublicized risks associated with statins.or we're just not getting the whole story. Every medication has a risk and a benefit. If the risks or side effects outweigh the benefits, that makes the drug dangerous. There have been a lot of people who do not need statins who have been given them, and that makes this drug dangerous for those people.
What are some of the side effects associated with statins One of the most common side effects is muscle aches or body aches, joint pain, oftentimes people feel them in their legs. Some other side effects are elevated liver tests, which could be a problem, but once the statins are stopped, usually those enzymes or liver tests come down. There could be kidney abnormalities if doses of statins are too high. Some people describe fog brain, really sort of this inability to think, and again, when the statin is stopped, these symptoms go away. But those are the most common things we see in people taking.
Statins. What about the special risks for women taking statins I've heard that particularly with healthy women, taking statins can increase their risk for diabetes. I'm glad you asked that question, because the headline said Statins Lead to Diabetes in Women, but in that particular study, it looked at women who were at risk for diabetes in the first place. They were given statins, and over time, their diabetes developed. Healthy women shouldn't be taking statins in the first place, but if they are, they're not at risk for diabetes. Wasn't there also a recent study that showed there are actually more people being harmed.
By taking statins unnecessarily than people without preexisting conditions that were being saved by them I mean, are millions of people just wasting their money and increasing their risk at the same time There are many people taking statins who really don't need to be on them, but we know for sure that for people who have had a heart attack or heart disease or stents, statins are lifesaving. If you're at intermediate risk for heart disease and have risk factorshigh blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, family history, sedentary lifestyle,.
Tooth Gum Abscesses Relieving the Pain of an Abscessed Tooth
I'm Dr. Joe Neely and I practice with the Barton Oaks Dental Group. We're going to talk about relieving the pain of an abscessed tooth. And abscess is an infection that's trapped somewhere. So in the case of an abscessed tooth the infection is trapped between the hard outer shell of the tooth, the ligament and bone, which hold the tooth in your mouth. And so the pain is caused by swelling. By pressure, especially in between two hard objects. If you get an infection inside the tooth that has spread through the root tip into the ligament.
That holds the tooth in it becomes like hydraulic in nature. Any kind of pressure on the tooth is magnified many times over. So the pain is relieved by reducing the pressure. The pressure is reduced by reducing the volume of the infection through antibiotics. Allowing a vent for the infection either by drilling a hole through the top of the tooth into the main chamber or through the gum and bone to the area around the tip or apex of the tooth. You relieve the pain of an abscessed tooth by relieving the pressure.
