Get a Grip on Your Health
I'm Gabe Garza with today's health news. A firm handshake may indicate that you're in good health. A new study found that grip strength may be a better screening tool than blood pressure. This means that doctors might be able to use a grip strength test as a quick, lowcost way to identify patients at high risk for early death from serious illnesses like stroke and heart failure. Researchers found that each 5kilogram drop in grip strength was tied to a 17 percent greater risk of death from heartrelated illness and noncardiovascular.
Working overtime doubles stroke risks study
It's no secret that working all hours of the day can have a serious effect on your health. A new study by a local hospital shows that putting in those extra hours at the office can more than double your risk of having a stroke. Hwang Sunghee reports. Thirtysevenyearold Jung Daewoong suffered a stroke two years ago. Since then, his left arm has been paralysed and he is unable to use his left leg freely. Jung says working 19 hours a day, for 10 years, had weakened the blood vessels on his brain.
I always had a headache and felt tired. But I thought I was just hungover. Working night and day like Jung for too long can increase the risk of a stroke. But just how many hours of working overtime is too much A study by the Seoul National University Bundang Hospital showed the risk of suffering a stroke was 38 percent higher for those who worked nine to 12 hours a day, compared to people with four hour shifts. For those who worked more than 13 hours a day, the risk was 94 percent higher. Doctors say overworking and the stress that.
Comes with it, can raise a person's blood pressure and damage the brain's blood vessel walls. If a person overworks, this accelerates the sympathetic nerve and if one is under too much stress it leads to high blood pressure. This process leads to the damaging of blood vessel walls. There are no clear symptoms of a stroke. But if a person suddenly has difficulty with raising one arm or leg or has speech problems, a doctor should be seen, immediately. There are, however, some ways to prevent a stroke, like excersising regularly, going.
Dr. Graeme Smith
I look at conditions that can be markers of future maternal health so we know that pregnancy is essentially a stress test if you develop something like preeclampsia which is a type of high blood pressure disorder in pregnancy it does increase the chance of you developing cardiovascular disease down the road, not because the preeclampsia caused the problem, preeclampsia just unmasks the problem. We did a study where we basically followed women postpartum for a prolonged period of time. We took that research and say okay, this is a group that would benefit from.
Not just participating in studies but in terms of longerterm followup, so I was able to create the maternal health clinic. So what we do is we bring them back six months after delivery and we do cardiovascular screening and so based on those parameters we can come up with their individualized risk of future cardiovascular disease. Pregnancy is all about mom and after delivery you know the focus is on the baby moms tend to get forgotten about, but again this is a real opportunity for affecting the health of the family as a whole.
Does More Sex Mean More Money
You know what they say, more money more problems, well what about more money more sex Hey guys, Julia here for Dnews A recent study from Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, England found a link between income and sex. Oooh exciting right But before we talk about sex, let's talk about subscribing We know you're curious about getting it on, so get your subscribe on so you don't miss an episode of DNews. We've also got a playlist filled with tutorials all about the sexy times. Check out links for that down in the description below.
Now that you've subscribed, let's get to back to the subject of sex. In a study published in the International Journal of Manpower, researchers reviewed data from 75hundred participants and found those who had sex two or three times a week made 4.5 more income than their less frisky coworkers. Even those who weren't in perfect health still benefited from a higher salary, they earned 1.5 than their similarly less fit coworkers. The lead researcher from the study says the data supports the idea that more money, means more sex and vice versa, that having more sex might give you a boost in the boardroom.
Okay okay. I know. Correlation does not equal causation. So let's break this down. Sex might be good for us for all sorts of reasons. Some doctors say its relaxation effects help soothe stress. Small studies like one published in the journal Biological Psychology suggests it helps lower blood pressure spikes. Other research shows that pleasureable actvities, like sex, reduce stress. And another study from the Archives of Sexual Behavior shows that sex lowers anxiety and can boost your mood the next day. These mental health benefits might make us more alert on the job and ready to tackle any challenges with ease.
Maybe frequent sex is the sign of a strong relationship and strong relationships also have health benefits. According to the journal BMC Public Health, people who are satisfied in their relationships have a kind of buttress against emotional distress. Or another way of looking at it, maybe getting it on more often is a vote of confidence. If you're getting lucky at home, maybe that leaves a little more pep in your step when you head to work. Some research from the University of Melbourne showed that selfconfidence is a key determinant of workplace success. When you feel better about yourself you're more.
Likely to do a better job. Or maybe you know, it's the other way around. It could be that healthier people do better in the workplace and healthier people also happen to have more sex. The same study in the Journal of International Manpower found that people without disabilities are 13 more sexually active than those with disabilities and people with heart disease have 11.4 less sex than their healthier peers. Studying the link between health and sex and status is surprisingly difficult. Most studies rely on selfreporting, so you know, people don't always tell the truth. Especially.
When it comes to a subject as touchy as sex. I guess you could say. More research is needed. On the topic of sex research, did you know that funny people get laid more Trace and I explore that connection in this tutorial Oh come on, i know.we're all curious about sex and we all know that what you learn in health class might not be all that. er factual. And here at DNews we'll stick to the science. So if you've got questions, I know you do, leave em down in the comments.
Wealth Equals Health
IN AMERICA, WEALTH PRETTY MUCH EQUALS HEALTH, AND THAT'S TRUE FOR ME AS IT IS TRUE FOR THE POOREST PERSON IN THE INNER CITY. THERE'S A GRADIENT, AND ALL THE WAY ALONG THE WAY, YOU CAN FIND YOURSELF SOMEWHERE ALONG THAT GRADIENT. IT'S NOT LIKE YOU'RE POOR AND YOU HAVE BAD HEALTH AND THEN YOU'RE NOT POOR AND YOU HAVE GOOD HEALTH. FOR EACH STEP ALONG THAT WEALTH GRADIENT, YOU HAVE A CORRESPONDING STEP OF HEALTH. WHEN YOU'RE A NEW IMMIGRANT, THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN WEALTH AND HEALTH IS RELATIVELY LOOSE. AS YOU BECOME MORE AMERICAN,.
THAT RELATIONSHIP BECOMES TIGHTER AND TIGHTER AND TIGHTER. Narrator AFTER ONLY FIVE YEARS IN THE U.S., LATINO IMMIGRANTS ARE 1 12 TIMES MORE LIKELY TO HAVE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE THAN WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVED. AND TO BE OBESE. RATES OF HEART DISEASE AND DIABETES ALSO INCREASE. MORE THAN 20 OF LATINO HOUSEHOLDS ARE POOR. THE LONGER THEY'RE HERE, THE MORE IMMIGRANT FAMILIES STRUGGLE WITH DISCRIMINATION, LOWPAYING JOBS, BAD SCHOOLS, AND BAD HOUSING. Dr. Iton AND IF THAT ENVIRONMENT IS GIVING YOU CUES THAT YOU'RE NOT VALUABLE, THAT YOU HAVE VERY LITTLE PROSPECT FOR A GOOD FUTURE,.
Living in Disadvantaged Neighborhoods is Bad for Your Health
Blackwell WE HAD VAST PUBLIC INVESTMENTS IN BUILDING THE SUBURBS OF AMERICA. FEDERALLY SUPPORTED LOANS, FHA LOANS, WENT TO PEOPLE WHO WERE MOVING TO THE SUBURBS. AND FOR MANY YEARS, UP UNTIL THE '60s, THOSE LOANS WERE AVAILABLE ON A RACIALLY RESTRICTED BASIS. AFRICANAMERICANS AND OTHER PEOPLE OF COLOR DIDN'T HAVE ACCESS TO THEM. Narrator UNTIL 1962, OUT OF $120 BILLION IN GOVERNMENTBACKED HOME LOANS, LESS THAN 2 WENT TO NONWHITE HOUSEHOLDS. IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA, BETWEEN THE WAR AND 1960, OF 350,000 FEDERALLY GUARANTEED NEW HOME LOANS, LESS THAN 100 WENT TO BLACK FAMILIES.
IN CITIES LIKE RICHMOND, AFRICANAMERICANS WERE LEFT BEHIND IN INCREASINGLY NEGLECTED NEIGHBORHOODS. IN THE 1980s, POOR LATINO AND SOUTHEAST ASIAN IMMIGRANTS BEGAN JOINING THEM IN THESE SAME NEIGHBORHOODS. Kubzansky ONCE A COMMUNITY STARTS TO GO DOWNHILL, NOBODY WANTS TO ACTUALLY INVEST IN THE COMMUNITY, SO THE BANKS DON'T WANT TO COME IN AND THE SHOPS DON'T WANT TO COME IN. THEN YOU DON'T HAVE A COMMERCIAL BASE. YOU DON'T HAVE THE COMMUNITY TAXES THAT CAN THEN FEED BACK INTO THE SCHOOLS. NOW YOU DON'T HAVE GOOD SCHOOLS, SO FAMILIES DON'T WANT TO MOVE INTO THE COMMUNITY.
IF THEY DON'T HAVE TO. AND YOU GET A SORT OF VICIOUS CYCLE OF EVERYBODY WHO CAN WILL LEAVE THE COMMUNITY. Blackwell THIS ISN'T SOMETHING THAT HAPPENS OVERNIGHT, AND IT ISN'T THE FAULT OF THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE THERE. THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN LOWINCOME, DISINVESTED COMMUNITIES DID NOT DO THIS TO THEMSELVES. Narrator 20 YEARS BEFORE HIS HEART ATTACK, GWAI TRIED TO MOVE HIS FAMILY OUT OF RICHMOND, BUT 11 MONTHS LATER, THEY HAD TO MOVE BACK. Gwai I CAN'T FIND MY JOB UP THERE, AND SHE CAN'T FIND A JOB UP THERE.
AND MY OLDER SON, YOU KNOW, HANG AROUND WITH THE WRONG GROUP AND THEN USED SOME KIND OF DRUG. I JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. I TRIED TO HELP HIM. I TRIED TO STRAIGHTEN HIM OUT. SPENT A LOT OF MONEY, OWE PEOPLE A LOT OF MONEY. THAT'S WHAT'S IN MY MIND ALL THE TIME SUCH WORRY, JUST WORRY, WORRY WHEN I'M GONNA PAY UP ALL OF THIS AND HOW I'M GONNA DO IT. Kubzansky IF YOU THINK ABOUT WHEN YOU'RE WORRIED, YOU'RE ALWAYS A LITTLE BIT MORE ACTIVATED.
YOU'RE CHECKING THINGS OUT A LITTLE BIT MORE CAREFULLY. AND IF YOU CAN IMAGINE THAT HAPPENING DAY AFTER DAY, ALL DAY, EVERY DAY, IT'S EXHAUSTING. AND IT WEARS ON THE BODY SYSTEM. Narrator WHEN STRESS IS CHRONIC, WHEN WE'RE ENDLESSLY WORRIED ABOUT OUR BILLS, OUR JOB, OUR CHILDREN'S SAFETY, THE BODY PUMPS OUT CORTISOL AND ADRENALINE. BUT TOO MUCH OF THESE STRESS HORMONES OVER TIME CAN INCREASE ARTERIAL PLAQUE, RAISE BLOOD PRESSURE, AND WEAKEN OUR IMMUNE SYSTEM, INCREASING OUR RISK FOR ALMOST EVERY CHRONIC DISEASE, INCLUDING HEART DISEASE, THE LEADING KILLER IN AMERICA.
