Skills Blood Pressure Measurement
Taking a patient's blood pressure is a necessary part of our patient care. The blood pressure provides us the ability to treat and trend our patients as long as it's taken accurately. Auscultation and palpation are two of the most common methods used. However, there are a number of factors we should keep in mind so that our readings are accurate. The arm must be placed at heart level. Cuff size is based on a limb size, so measure the cuff appropriately. Place the cuff over the brachial artery, keeping the.
Bottom of the cuff one to one half inches above the bend in the elbow. Insert the stethoscope in your ears with ear pieces pointing slightly forward. Gently tap on the diaphragm to assure the stethoscope is positioned correctly. Palpate the brachial artery and place the bell of the stethoscope over the brachial artery. Palpate or auscultate the brachial artery while inflating the cuff to 30 millimeters of mercury above the loss of the pulse. Deflate the cuff at a rate of two to three millimeters per mercury per second. Too fast or too slow of a deflation results in missing.
Sounds and inaccurate readings. The systolic pressure is recorded when you hear at least two consecutive sounds and the diastolic pressure is recorded when the sound becomes muffled. The arm must be placed at heart level. Cuff size is based on a limb size, so measure the cuff appropriately. Palpate the brachial artery and place the cuff over the brachial artery, keeping the bottom of the cuff one to one and a half inches above the bend in the elbow. Palpate the brachial or radial artery while inflating the cuff to 30 millimeters of mercury above.
How to Take Blood Pressure Tips for Taking Blood Pressure
So important tips for taking blood pressure, before you actually take the blood pressure. One, you should be seated and relaxed for about fifteen minutes before you actually take it. You should not have consumed alcohol or coffee for two hours before taking a blood pressure. You shouldn't have smoked fifteen minutes before taking a blood pressure. All those thing effect the arterial resistance, and therefore will have an artificial elevation or for most part will be elevated beyond what it should be. The other thing is cuff size, be sure the cuff before is fitted for a normal person. If you have small arms or large arms.
You'll have a falsely elevated or reduced blood pressure. So if the cuff is too large for your arm, you'll have a lower blood pressure than you should. And if it's too small, you'll have a higher blood pressure than you should. So the cuff should be about eighty percent of the circumference of your arm, around eighty percent it doesn't have to be exact. Other important tip is your posture, should be sited up straight that's not as important. The main this is your elbow should be relaxed, so when you take your blood pressure you want to have.
High Blood Pressure Tips Treatments Exercise for High Blood Pressure
Okay so next we want to talk about how exercise relates to blood pressure. There's some research done on how exercise can reduce blood pressure. And they found that exercise can reduce your blood pressure by as much as ten millimeters of mercury on the systolic side. And you have to continue to do that exercise in order for it to have that effect though. Once you reach that reduced blood pressure you have to maintain that other wise it will go back up. So we want to talk about, in this series, we want to talk about the kinds of exercise, the duration.
Of exercise, and the intensity of the exercise. So what kinds of exercise have this effect on blood pressure Mainly aerobic exercise. So aerobic exercise can be different things for different people, and you need to be careful when you're starting a new exercise program. But what we can say is that you should be breathing briskly. So we will get into the intensity in the next segment, but you should be doing this brisk walking, jogging, where you can still carry a conversation, but you're a little bit winded and you should be doing.
That for thirty to forty minutes, four to five times a week. And how this has its effect is it allows the arterial system to be more responsive to the changing pressures that occur with exercise. And we'll be demonstrating that a little bit later, but it's basically the arterial system has to go a little bit further and to a wider range of muscles and tissues and so the heart has to work a lot harder to get that pressure to that area. And when you're at rest, as your body accommodates to the exercise that you're doing, it's allowed.
How to Take Blood Pressure How to Take Blood Pressure
Okay so now we got the blood pressure cuff inflated fully. And there's no longer a pulse coming through that brachael artery. Now you want to slowly open up the dial, so that the blood pressure is, the millimeters of mercury is falling around 2 millimeters of mercury per second. And when you hear that first beat, that is your systolic pressure, and then continue deflating at 2 millimeters of mercury until you no longer hear that beat, and that is your diastolic pressure. So the systolic pressure is the pressure on top, and the diastolic.

As we said earlier the way that we calculate that intensity is 220 minus the age, minus the resting heart rate, and then you multiply your intensity. If you want 60 of the heart rate, or 70 of the heart rate.6, or.7. Then you add that on to your resting heart rate, and we already showed that calculation. Bob's going to need to jog to get up to his target heart rate. Some people won't have.
To actually jog to get to their target heart rate. His target heart rate is 126. Once he reaches that 126 level, then he will maintain that for the duration of his cardiovascular workout about twenty or thirty minutes. We're now at his target heart rate, so he would maintain that for the duration, and as we saw with the calculation, you use the 220 minus his age, minus his resting heart rate, and then multiply that by whatever intensity you want 60 or 70, and then you add his resting heart rate back on to that, and we.

Nutrition Tips About Sesame Oil for High Blood Pressure
My name is Christine Marquette, and I'm a registered dietitian, with the Austin Regional Clinic, and I'm going to talk to you about sesame oil for high blood pressure. There's actually been several studies recently on sesame oil, and the effects of it on your blood pressure. It is actually thought that a couple of powerful antioxidants found in sesame oil, called sesamin, and sesamol, may be the key components that are responsible for lowering blood pressure, and in the research that has been done, what they found was two different studies actually, looked at people who were taking blood pressure medications.
Already, and in one group, they were taking a particular blood pressure medication called Procardia. They had been taking it, and it had not lowered their blood pressure, so these people were asked to substitute their regular cooking oil, with sesame oil. After a period of sixty days, the average blood pressure had dropped to normal, and the other study, it looked at people who were taking either beta blockers or diuretics, and they found a very similar effect. After forty five days, these people had their blood pressure drop down to normal levels. To see what would happen if they resumed their normal eating habits,.
They went back to their regular cooking oil, and their blood pressure increased again, so once again, they put them on the sesame seed oil, just their normal eating habits. Their blood pressure dropped back down to normal ,so this is very promising. It's actually showing that sesame oil has a very potential benefit, for lowering blood pressure. In addition, it also is very rich in monounsaturated fats, and polyunsaturated fats, so besides being beneficial for your blood pressure, it's actually also good for your blood cholesterol, so overall, sesame oil is a very heart healthy oil, and it's very tasty also. It's a good oil to use.
